The Poetry of Richard Schletty
MISERIES
Miseries, the handmaidens of our broken dreams,
The siblings of our misfortunes,
Mistresses for our grief and anger,
Wherein we plunge our shards and daggers.

So blind as to see no hope,
So brazen as to win no favor,
So ugly as to lose all contests,
Silent as our Mighty God on high,

Miseries love the company of fallen angels,
The gatherings of other Miseries,
Begetting more pain and sorrow,
Driving nails through our knees.

Oh, if we could only vanquish their kind
and gain admittance to The Garden.
