HEAVEN by Jai Uttal
Pieces of my life
Carried in my hand
I found a treasure
Buried in the sand
Here, and then it's gone
Is that the only rule?
Open up my eyes
I'm on my own again
Looking for my heaven
Looking for my heaven
I had a dream that they were standing at my door
I give them what they want and they still want more
Across the ocean, I can walk a distant land
Should I take a chance and never come back home again?
Looking for my heaven
Face against the glass
I'm looking for my heaven
And I'm gonna make it last
Every time I see my life rushing by
Never knowing when to laugh or when to cry
Let the waters take me
Let them slow me down
Open up my eyes and now I'm home again
Looking for my heaven
My face against the glass
Looking for my heaven
And I'm gonna make it last
I'm gonna make it last
I'm gonna make it last
Song Notes: A great deal of tension is released in the flowing continuum of the opening bars, tension built up over the way Alfie and No More push forward, relentlessly, with so little footing. Musically, Heaven provides a sense of place, even if the words place the singer outside with his "face against the glass." The mixture of belonging and alientation is what gives this song it's power.
I first heard this song when at an United Nations event in 1993. A woman from Trinidad asked if I had ever heard of Jai Uttal, thought I would like him. I confessed I had never heard of him. She said he was, perhaps, the most popular sing-songwriter of the Hindu world. We went to a corner record store and I purchased his most current album, Monkey. This song, Heaven, blew me away. It has haunted me for two decades. I finally sat down and played it one night for Suzanne. She loved it. So, here it is. The chords are quite different than the original, but the words and ambience are unaltered.
