Lyrics

SOMEWHERE
Music by Leonard Bernstein/Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

There's a place for us
Somewhere a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere

There's a time for us
Some day a time for us
Time together with time to spare
Time to learn, time to care
Someday
Somewhere

We'll find a new way of living
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere

There's a place for us
A time and place for us
Hold my hand and we're halfway there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow
Someday
Somewhere

Liner Notes

Song Notes: This is is one of the most tragic songs ever written. This is also one of the most plaintively hopeful songs ever written. And one of the most fragile songs; one of the most powerful songs. From its simple lyrics, its few words, so much is expressed.

I didn't want the piano part to get in the way. I begin by playing as few notes as I dare, speaking to that simplicity. I end with a suspended chord, for the singer cannot let this hope end - of sometime, of somewhere. The illusion needed to be preserved.

When I sang the final verse, I began to cry. Crying for me can be nearly leathal, as my lungs start excreting fluids and swelling up. (One of the effects of my A1AD.) I hung on for that last note. But I couldn't sing anymore that day. Fitting for the final track. I have a hard time listening...
