Jump to:  MP3s & Poetry links

Love and loss, joy and betrayal, courage and perseverance define this spoken word offering. Tobin Mueller's award-winning poetry is brought to life by Gregory Deltufo's stunning readings.

The accompanying music, also by Mueller, is more than illustrative. Each composition creates a unique visual and emotive setting, often evoking both memory and imagination, giving these audio tracks a cinematic sensibility. In addition to the seven poems chosen, Mueller has added three instrumental tracks, including a wonderfully romantic piano solo inspired by his wife, Suzanne Deltufo, who also happens to be Gregory's sister.

"Gregory's deep voice, tinged with irony and personal insight, is very different than the voice I heard in my head while writing these poems", Mueller said. Like a playwright handing his work over to actors, Mueller let Gregory interpret his words in unpredictable ways. "His distinct personality led me to rework some of the lines," Mueller explained, "in order to make better use of his compelling style. It's been a very satisfying collaboration."

Underscoring styles range from orchestral instrumentals to synth fusion, world rhythms to modal New Age. Many are reminiscent of the progressive electronica found on Mueller's 2019 release, WONDER. "Where Is Love" is a previously unreleased version, an alternative take recorded for Standard Deviations, Vol. 2 (2018).

One of the most fascinating artists I've gotten to know over the past years has been Tobin Mueller. I never know what's coming next but always know it will be original, fascinating and completely honest. A composer and interpretive pianist who's works include musical theatre, film scores, ballets, symphonies, video game soundtracks, children's music, fiction, political essays, philosophy, domestic humor, photography... 'Puzzle People' is Tobin's 24th album that I have reviewed and is a collection of his award-winning poetry. Passionate and enduring, ironic and introspective, expressive and satisfying. Highly recommended!”

Puzzle People is produced and mastered by Kenny Cash and Tom Stewart, Factory Underground Studios. It was originally recorded under the working title "As Simple As Soap". Cover art is by Hovakimian Anoushavan. Special thanks to Pam Pia, editor.

After listening to the album, I felt like I was lifting a glass of bourbon at a table with Miles Davis, Pablo Picasso and Timothy Leary. As if from a psychedelic cigar, genius hovered in the air.”
