To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.
To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.
This is my quest,
To follow that star --
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause.
And I know if I only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest.
And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage.
To fight the unbeatable foe.
To reach the unreachable star.
- lyrics by Mitch Leigh/Joe Darion
Song Notes: My take on this song differs from the triumphant show stopper usually performed on stage. I tried to personalize it by singing from the point of view of someone who knew the dream is impossible, as the lyrics state, yet perserveres, nonethless. It is recorded withought a wind screen on purpose, although a rather esoteric purpose. I wanted the listener to feel my breath, like pressure on the ear. To reach out beyond the limits of space and time and life and death. I also wanted to approximate a live performance as much as possible, even though I was the only person in the room at the time.
Like all of these songs, please pay special attention to the piano. I hope it speaks for itself.
