Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly
Blackbird fly
(All your life)
Into to light of the dark black night
*We are stardust
*We are golden
*And we have to get ourselves back (this moment)
*To the garden
Black bird fly...
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
...Into to light of the dark black night
- lyrics by Paul McCartney
*from WOODSTOCK by Joni Mitchell
Song Notes: In this arrangement, I wanted to never forget about those fragile wings, those free and joyous wings. And never forget about the night, the all-encompassing night. And this moment. Arising. I hope you can see it, as well as hear it.
"Blackbird" is a Beatles song from the double-disc album The Beatles (also known as The White Album). Blackbird was written by Paul McCartney, but credited to Lennon–McCartney. McCartney was inspired to write it while in Scotland as a reaction to racial tensions escalating in the United States in the spring of 1968. I added a quote from Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" (Ladies of the Canyon, 1970) as a kind of dream of preciousness and magic, starlight and brightness, inside the flying bird. The imagery of "Woodstock" seemed just right, on many levels. I hope Paul doesn't mind. Or Joni.
The piano sounds particularly good on this one. All the notes came through. Please pay special attantion to the shifting chords. This is the sort of thing I play most of the time, when I sit down at my piano and the moment rises up inside.
